CHAS Health & Safety Assessment Scheme

The largest scheme of its kind in the UK, CHAS (Contractors Health & Safety) was originally aimed at local authorities, but now covers other areas including education authorities, charities, NHS trusts, emergency services and housing associations.

CHAS also covers large private companies working in construction, utilities, manufacturing, transport and distribution. If your business tenders for work or supply services to these sectors, or intends to do so in the future, CHAS accreditation is vital.

Because CHAS is part of the Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP), CHAS accreditation is recognised by other SSIP members, making multiple accreditations unnecessary.

We have a 100% success rate for CHAS applications, with services including:

  • A review of current management system and associated documentation to ensure relevance to works undertaken
  • The preparation of a bespoke occupational health & safety manual, if required
  • A gap analysis during the certification process
  • An auditor’s report to identify gaps and the preparation of an action plan for compliance.

Safecontractor

Safecontractor was initially developed as a bespoke project for a Property Management client who wished to outsource the annual vetting of contractors on its approved list.

Interest shown by other similar clients identified the potential for a standardised system that could be offered to the whole of the company’s client base.

Our success rate for Safecontractor applications is 100%, with the help of 4Sight services including:

  • A review of current management system and associated documentation to make sure it’s relevant to the works undertaken
  • The preparation of a bespoke occupational health & safety manual, if required
  • A gap analysis during the certification process
  • An auditor’s report to identify gaps and the preparation of action plan for compliance.

ConstructionLine

We can help you complete the complex health & safety and environmental sections of your application for ConstructionLine, the UK’s largest register for pre-qualified contractors and consultants.

We have a 100% success rate for ConstructionLine applications, with the help of services including:

  • A guide on answering set questions
  • A review of your completed application
  • Advice on the evidence needed to satisfy the assessor’s requirements.

Our qualification process covers all aspects of the business’s operations, including health & safety, with one assessment opening up access to many organisations.

We have a 100% Achilles applicant success rate, with the help of services including:

  • A review of your current management system and associated documentation to make sure it’s relevant to the works undertaken
  • The preparation of a bespoke occupational health & safety, environmental and quality manual, if required
  • A gap analysis during the certification process
  • An auditor’s report to identify gaps and identify an action plan for compliances
  • Attendance on the day of audit, if required.

SMAS

As SMAS Ltd is a Registered Member of the Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) Forum, your SMAS Worksafe certificate will be recognised by many other SSIP member schemes.

While your SMAS certificate remains valid, you won’t have to complete additional full Health & Safety assessment questionnaires for SSIP member schemes offering mutual recognition. (For further details see ssip.org.uk.)

Contractors and consultants accredited by an SSIP member scheme have demonstrated that they’ve achieved the initial threshold of competence to provide specific services. As a result, many clients will now only select contractors and consultants from an approved database, membership of which offers proof of the competence of H&S management systems. Compliance Health & Safety can help you to complete your SMAS accreditation and deal with SMAS on your behalf.

The key documents you will need are:

  • H&S Policy
  • Sample method statements and risk assessments
  • Information on h&s training (certificates/records etc)
  • Information on current insurances
  • Sub-contractor assessment processes
  • Accident records
  • Additional information may be required for some industries.
